I am preparing a class on Rock Crystal for an Advent spirituality group at my local parish in Pennsylvania. I chose Stifter's story because it far transcends the genre to which it belongs, the tale of adventure.
I have reference to its deeply spiritual theme, which elevates the narrative to the realm of those stories
that show how tragic adversity can be a means of creating, perhaps for the first time a true community.

Oh go on, steffee. Tell us what you read. But yes, The Ice Palace is certainly the better option for a wintry read, especially one that lingers on, long since it melted back onto the shelf.

Oh, I wish I'd seen this review earlier. I was looking for a nice little festive tale to sink into, and settled on... oh, actually, I won't even mention it.

Not sure about this, though. It has a weird title, though I 'get' it... I'll probably look for The Ice Palace first.

Hi litlove. It seems that you are correct in that Stifter's work is scant, as regards translation. I've only found Rock Crystal, which was published by Pushkin Press in 1999 and Brigitta (with Abdias, Limestone, and The Forest Path) from Angel Classics. Pushkin will be publishing another, The Bachelors, in March 2008.

I studied Stifter at university and grew fond of the redemptive romanticism of his works. He is at his best, however, when portraying suppressed passion. I thought that very little of his work was currently available in translation; I'll have to look this one out.

Hm, a Pushkin eh? At the same time my inner child keeps wanting to respond to the name Adalbert Stifter with the comment, "Did he now, the dirty old sod?"
