Good review Steve. This was the first book I read by him, bit before the Bolano boom started. It captivated me enough to start looking for other works by him and I was not disappointed.

Bolano blows my mind. I've read 2666, and I'm 600 pages through Savage Detectives, nearing the end. Here is a writer whose knowledge of the human experience runs so deep he makes me almost nervous with happiness when he performs. By Night in Chile is next on the reading list for me. Thanks for the review.

Presumably, you’ll be reading more of Bolaño’s translated works in due course.

Oh, yes. I almost went straight from By Night In Chile to Distant Star, but thought it better to put some time between titles.

Fantastic review, Stewart. I read the blurb on the back of this today and thought it appeared rather deep, but, having read your review and bits and pieces elsewhere, it seems not to be. Or rather, it seems to meld nicely the serious message with light-hearted description.

Your quoted "stream of consciousness" visit to Avignon passage is quite wonderful.

Great review, Stewart! My own of this book keeps getting pushed back due to other topics but is currently scheduled for next week. My own view is that I like Bolaño more with every book I read. He always shows how well he can write, but the recurring themes are starting to sink in, and the varied way he tells the story is always so impressive. I'm still not sure I can believe that 2666 is his masterpiece, but I'm glad we have many small gems like this one.
